The Community Café is a friendly, caring place where everyone is welcomed. It’s run by the Good Neighbour Scheme, with the help of many volunteers who man the kitchen and provide lifts to village residents. It’s open every Tuesday afternoon, from 2 to 4 pm, and is held in the Village Hall on Main Street most of the year. In July and August it moves to the Youth and Community Hall just below the car park, so customers can take their drinks and cakes outside and sit on the benches if they wish.
The Café is open to everyone! We have customers who come every week to chat and catch up. Parents with young children come along to enjoy meeting up, sharing experiences and encouraging play. There’s a small selection of toys available but families can bring their own activities if they wish. We always have a jigsaw on the go and often a game of dominoes or bridge will be taking place. We’ve just finished knitting squares to make a blanket and are planning our next project for those who like to keep their hands busy whilst they chat. We have a laptop so that anyone without access to IT at home can look up information, with help if necessary. There’s always room for more activities so ideas are welcome.
On offer from the kitchen are hot and cold drinks and a selection of home-made cakes. There are no fixed charges, but we ask customers to make a donation towards the running costs if they can. In the summer we are often given surplus fruit and vegetables from the village allotments or local gardens, which customers can take freely or make a small donation if they wish.
We have space for pushchairs and mobility scooters and can organise a lift for anyone who cannot get to the Café under their own steam. Do come along and see for yourself – you’re guaranteed a warm welcome.
